ELBJAZZ 2022 - Judi Jackson

ELBJAZZ 2022: LINE-UP WITH 44 ACTS COMPLETE. DATES AND SUPPORTING PROGRAMME CONFIRMED.

Hamburg, 28 March 2022 – The entire ELBJAZZ programme on 3 and 4 June 2022 is now complete. The musical line-up includes a total of 44 international acts that can be experienced live on the festival Friday and Saturday, providing visitors with a whole range of concert experiences to an extent similar to previous ELBJAZZ years. The concert schedule has been published and is available online here.

21 newcomers – including US vocal talent Judi Jackson (photo), US saxophonist Donny McCaslin, Sweden’s best-known jazz musician Nils Landgren with his Funk Unit and the popular NDR Bigband feat. Silvan Strauss and Guests, – complete this year’s line-up of musicians.

Anyone who can generate enthusiasm and praise among US legends Mavis Staples and Wynton Marsalis while still only a teenager must have a special gift. For some years now, the American Judi Jackson has been living in London, where she won the Jazz FM Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 2020. Her album “Grace” was released in autumn 2021 and is a remarkable debut that combines casual retrosoul, smooth trip-hop, sumptuous strings and gospel with her powerful voice, reminiscent of Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu or Sade.

David Bowie’s death in 2016 heralded the end of a pop era. For Donny McCaslin, however, Bowie's last album “Blackstar” marked a new step in his career – the jazz saxophonist was largely responsible for the sound of the record. The Californian thus finally became a big name in an experimental scene that doesn’t care about boundaries: rock and electronic sounds define McCaslin’s albums under his own name, but he has never forgotten jazz. When he improvises with his buddies from the Bowie band, anything goes: heavy synth and drum attacks, but also powerful post-bop.

Those who once thought that tightly played Black music was the sole domain of big US names like Tower of Power were forced to think again. For almost 30 years, the Nils Landgren Funk Unit has stood for something that until then seemed impossible in Europe: bold old-school funk and smooth soul of the highest order. With his easy-going grooving sextet, audience favourite “Mr Red Horn” will prove again at this year’s ELBJAZZ that the band is unbreakable!

Although the publicly-funded cultural institution feels primarily committed to the legacy of a century of jazz history, there is hardly a crossover interface that the NDR Bigband has not yet explored. For example, the one between jazz and urban music currents such as hip-hop, which it will present at ELBJAZZ – in collaboration with Hamburg drummer Silvan Strauss, last year’s winner of the Hamburg Jazz Prize. Under the baton of NDR Bigband arranger Niels Klein, previously unreleased tracks by Strauss and his groove-focused quartet Toytoy will be presented in big-band guise, focusing entirely on individuality and soloistic brilliance without losing sight of the common goal: the typical NDR Bigband sound that sweeps everyone along with it.

Alle 21 new acts at a glance: Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Judi Jackson, Donny McCaslin, NDR Bigband feat. Silvan Strauss and Guests, Matthew Whitaker, Leléka, Bobby Rausch, Cats & Breakkies, Olivier Le Goas & Reciprocity, Myles Sanko, The European Jazz Workshop in Concert, Richie Beirach Trio, Jaco 70 - Word of Mouth Revisited, Clara Lucas & Hauke Renken with Strings, The Premier feat. Lutz Krajenski, BLUFF feat. Julius Gawlik & Christian Müller, The Collective Abroad, Vincent Dombrowski, Dinev-Anfinsen Quartet, Knollektiv, Clémence Manachère Unterwasser.

In addition to the concert schedule, the wide-ranging supporting programme is an integral part of ELBJAZZ – and was also announced today:

In cooperation with Jazzbüro Hamburg e.V., the Hamburg Jazz Prize is awarded every two years as part of ELBJAZZ. In 2021, the award went to drummer Silvan Strauss. Since no ceremony was possible last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the prize will now be presented this year, followed by the award winner’s concert.

JUGENDJAZZT@ELBJAZZ, in cooperation with the state competition “Jugend Jazzt”, will bring two prize-winning bands aged 14 to 25 to the stage for the first time with the big band formations YO! JAZZ and Think Big.

In two DJ workshops on scratching and club mixing, participants will learn all about turntables and how to use them artistically, while at the “Trumpet Talk”, Ingolf Burkhardt from the NDR Bigband will be on hand to answer questions and provide tips and tricks for playing music.

The ELBJAZZ Technical Tour offers an exclusive look behind the scenes and shows what technical requirements a concert entails.

Party and dance enthusiasts can continue the groove after the last concerts of the festival have ended: at the Mojo Jazz Café, Hamburg beat artist and producer High John & Guests will present hip-hop, jazz and soul-based music, sounds yearning for that heavenly feel, on Friday night (3 June 2022).
On Saturday night (4 June 2022), the after show at the Mojo will allow you to dance until the wee hours of the morning: Jazz remains the root, soul the feeling – brand new remixes and forgotten favourite songs await the revellers.

On Whitsunday, 5 June 2022, there will be a Jazz Service for Peace with Pastor Frank Engelbrecht and special guest Nils Landgren (solo) at the Hauptkirche St. Katharinen. It starts at 2 p.m.
