ELBJAZZ 2022 - Melody Gardot

ELBJAZZ CONFIRMS 23 ACTS FOR THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL ON 3 + 4 JUNE

Programme confirmed: Reservation for the concerts in the Elbphilharmonie (Grand Hall) starts today

Hamburg, 10 February 2022
ELBJAZZ is back with a large number of confirmed artists for this year: 23 international acts, including US singer Melody Gardot (photo) and Miles Davis guitarist and Grammy winner John McLaughlin with his all-star band The 4th Dimension, have confirmed their live performances for the festival in the Port of Hamburg on 3 and 4 June 2022.
The programme is once again very wide-ranging this year: from swing, funk and soul to hip-hop, vocal, piano and fusion jazz to pop and folk, all kinds of music are represented. ELBJAZZ visitors can also look forward to the two very popular main venues, which have also been confirmed: The maritime-urban Blohm+Voss shipyard and the world-famous Elbphilharmonie concert hall.

The acts confirmed include those performing a total of six concerts to be held as part of ELBJAZZ in the renowned Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie:

With her sparklingly clear voice, which reminds some of Nina Simone, others of Cassandra Wilson, the British singer Zara McFarlane combines hypnotic jazz, blues and soul with occasional elements of calypso, dub and other Caribbean-inspired sounds.

Trumpeter Mathias Eick & The Norwegian Wind Ensemble, Norway’s oldest orchestra, will create an extraordinary event in their ELBJAZZ performance: Eick’s compositions from his ECM release “Ravensburg” were arranged for The Norwegian Wind Ensemble by Erlend Skomsvoll.

With Web Web x Max Herre, Roberto di Gioia, one of Germany’s most versatile pianists, and his band Web Web, often referred to as a “jazz supergroup”, meets Freundeskreis rapper Max Herre. In this formation, the latter holds back on vocals, instead playing rhythm piano. It is a skillful homage to the rough jazz of the early 1970s – played by five virtuosos, whose pure joy in playing music is especially thrilling to see when they are live on stage.

The commemorative concert Tribute to Helmut Zacharias’ Hamburg Years with renowned artists, orchestras and upcoming talents is dedicated to the Hamburg years of the famous violinist Helmut Zacharias.

From jazz and pop to folk and world music to highly poetic worlds: Korean jazz vocalist Youn Sun Nah presents her brand-new album “Waking World” (2022) at her concert in the Grand Hall, brought to the stage by her freshly assembled quartet.

Lady Blackbird’s voice is reminiscent of the jazz divas of long ago. Many know her smash single “Boomerang” (released at the time under her real name, Marley Munroe). But it was only with the gritty, minimalist album “Black Acid Soul” that this special voice found an environment in which to blossom to its fullest – something audiences at the festival will be able to see for themselves live.

In addition to the programme at the Elbphilharmonie, these other acts can be experienced live at ELBJAZZ 2022:

The US singer Melody Gardot has already released five very different, widely acclaimed albums. From jazz and gospel to swing, pop or folk – Gardot, who has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, masters all of these with sophisticated elegance. Most recently, she released “Sunset in the Blue”, Brazilian bossa nova and jazz standards in English, French and Portuguese. “Gorgeous”, was the verdict of Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

He is the greatest guitarist in the world” – said colleague Pat Metheny. Miles Davis, not exactly known for eulogies, once claimed, “The guy is good as hell”. Six decades after his first performances, 80-year-old Englishman John McLaughlin, who combines rock and jazz like no other, continues to thrill audiences with a “progressive guitar sound and overwhelming sense of rhythm” (FAZ). Since 2009 McLaughlin has been playing with an international all-star band featuring Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Ranjit Barot (drums) and Étienne M’Bappé (bass): The 4th Dimension plays the finest electric fusion sounds with rich bass and razor-sharp solos.

The Moka Efti Orchestra feat. Severija is the original big band of the hit TV series “Babylon Berlin”. Together with singer Severija, the 14-member ensemble led by composers Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien and saxophonist and arranger Sebastian Borkowski brings the spirit of the Golden Twenties to life on stage.

By chance, Thomas D of Die Fantastischen Vier discovered a record by the Hamburg band The KBCS – and spontaneously invited them to his studio to record hits from the Fanta 4 cosmos as casual jazzy reinterpretations and compile them into the album “The M.A.R.S Sessions”. The KBCS don’t play instrumental hip-hop, but rather enrich Thomas D’s profound lyrics with a warm, meditative funk sound: rich basses, dry drum breaks, shimmering keyboards and soulful guitar solos.
