4. + 5. June 2021: ELBJAZZ DIGITAL

DIGITAL ELBJAZZ 2021 - China Moses

With concerts in the ARTE stream by The Notwist,
Nils Landgren Funk Unit, China Moses, Wendy McNeill
and others.

Hamburg, 27 May 2021
 - Even though it is not possible this year to dance beneath cranes and disco balls, surrounded by the Port of Hamburg – ELBJAZZ enthusiasts will by no means have to miss out on concerts:
On 4 and 5 June, an extensive digital edition of ELBJAZZ will take place in cooperation with ARTE CONCERT and NDR Kultur, and with the support of the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media. On both the Friday and Saturday of the festival, ARTE CONCERT and ELBJAZZ will present a select international programme of concert streams. The following artists – most of whom were already confirmed for this year – will be live in Hamburg on the first weekend in June to play a concert especially for the digital ELBJAZZ:
The Notwist, Nils Landgren Funk Unit, China Moses, Salvador Sobral, Verneri Pohjola Quartet, Wendy McNeill, Fehler Kuti and Masaa.

When The Notwist perform concerts, anything can happen: indie rock, noise jazz, kraut, minimal music or electronic pop. Above it all, Markus Acher’s fragile vocals dance: it sounds intellectual, but never top-heavy; it is catchy, but never twee.
Trombonist and singer Nils Landgren needs no introduction – Sweden’s best-known jazz musician delivers lush old-school funk and smooth soul of the highest order with his
Nils Landgren Funk Unit.
Paris-based soul diva China Moses is a born entertainer who knows how to switch from smooth jazz to powerful blues in an instant.
Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 – at the digital ELBJAZZ, the Portuguese artist will sing his sensitive ballads that hover between pop and jazz.
Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola thrills with bop, soul jazz, folklore and even rock – all of which he combines with a cool, Nordic sound.
In addition one can look forward to Canadian-Swedish singer/accordionist
Wendy McNeill, Munich synth-jazz popper Fehler Kuti, and the quartet Masaa with Lebanese singer Rabih Lahoud, which combines Arabic verse with contemporary jazz.

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media in Hamburg: “Even the great Duke Ellington knew: ‘Jazz is the freedom to have many forms.’ With courage, creativity and a great love of jazz, ELBJAZZ is bringing a fantastic festival to the digital stage in this Corona Year 2021. The communicative power of music will unfold in the digital space and
I look forward to musical talent, many discoveries and a great livestream experience.
The varied programme is an advertisement for jazz, for Hamburg as a city of music, and for the ELBJAZZ festival, which will hopefully take place in analogue form again in 2022.”

Three days of jazz in Hamburg, experienced digitally

On the eve of the digital ELBJAZZ there will also be a very special premiere – and cooperation – to celebrate: for the first time, the new Deutscher Jazzpreis (German Jazz Prize), awarded by the German Minister of Culture Monika Grütters, will be presented in Hamburg on 3 June 2021, and will be broadcast live from 7.30 p.m. on the Deutscher Jazzpreis website and the ELBJAZZ website. An independent jury of experts will award prizes in 31 categories to honour the work of artists as well as club operators and journalists. The event will be accompanied by a live performance by the Nils Landgren Funk Unit.

In order to create a ceremony worthy of the award winners in spite of the pandemic situation, and to make optimal use of the synergies of the two events in Hamburg as a music location, a studio environment tailored to the conditions of the two jazz highlights was created in an intensive and unique collaboration between Initiative Musik and ELBJAZZ GmbH.

ELBJAZZ goes virtual

In addition to the concerts in the ARTE stream, ELBJAZZ will exclusively present a virtual avatar festival in 3D as an interactive supplement on both days (4 and 5 June). It is browser-based, can therefore be experienced on one’s own computer, and can be accessed here. All visitors can create a personalised digital image with numerous possibilities for interaction. The audience can participate via the avatar with gestures, dance steps, emojis and a chat function, interact with other fans and also communicate with them in voice mode. This makes it possible to virtually experience ELBJAZZ, which will take place at two outdoor locations that are based visually on the original festival, plus one indoor location. The programme will feature live gigs and DJ sets as well as recorded concerts from previous ELBJAZZ years – including by the Michael Wollny Trio, the Nils Wülker Trio, Nighthawks and Martin Tingvall solo and as part of a trio.
The recorded content will be presented as a loop. The live gigs will be held in a studio in Hamburg and broadcast simultaneously on the virtual ELBJAZZ stage.
