SOUL DIVA CHINA MOSES AND FOUR OTHER FEMALE ARTISTS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE LINE-UP.

Hamburg, 3 March 2020 - Five female artists, China Moses (photo), Hannah Epperson, Nicole Atkins, Dominique Fils-Aimé and Wendy McNeill, have been added to the music programme, with a stylistic spectrum that ranges from jazz and soul to neo-classical influences, coupled with indie-pop, rock ‘n’ roll and folk:

China Moses is a born entertainer who switches from smooth jazz to powerful blues and back within seconds. She has been recording music for more than 20 years, mostly albums with cover versions of classics. But she didn’t really make her breakthrough until 2017, with “Nightintales”, a work full of her own dazzling compositions ranging from jazz, pop and soul. On stage, the Californian-born star has a similarly captivating presence as her mother, the jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater. Both are capable of thrilling every audience in an instant with their charisma and coolness.

At her concerts, Hannah Epperson creates special live moments when she gets caught up in her very own worlds with her violin, voice and loop pedal. At times the pieces by the US songwriter exist in a reduced acoustic guise, at other times in an indie-pop idiom, recalling Björk while meandering in neo-classical realms. Epperson’s texts are a mixture of the real and the surreal, the finite and the limitless, with such a suggestive timbre and enchanting violin-playing that the artist captivates her audience from the very first note.

Nicole Atkins calls her music a “rock ‘n’ roll epic”. Her songs conjure up the good old times, when all was well with the world and personal heartache was the greatest catastrophe of all. The musician from New Jersey is dedicated to classical song writing, which focuses on the voice. This can be heard on her current album “Italian Ice”, with charming retro rhythms provided by members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (Aretha Franklin, Etta James).

Dominique Fils-Aimé: Like her spiritual sisters Melanie de Biasio and Melody Gardot, the Franco-Canadian singer with Haitian roots has a broad understanding of the genre. She mixes folk, gospel, soul and minimalistic R’n’B, while the instrumental accompaniment is always reduced to the minimum. Above it all floats the cool, casual voice of the woman from Montréal, who multiplies her most expressive organ by means of loops.

The Canadian folk-noir singer Wendy McNeill finds inspiration above all in the
wide-ranging nature of her homeland. Among the fauna on her current album “Hunger Made You Brave” are dogs, a robin, a wolf, a fox and a bear, around which she spins her stories using looped vocals, accordion and guitar.

Further additions to the programme include the Canadian blues singer and guitarist
Matt Andersen and the Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola.
