THE NOTWIST AND EIGHT MORE ACTS CONFIRMED.
MARKUS ACHER + MICHA ACHER ARE “ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE”.

ELBJAZZ is continuing its “Artist in Residence” concept from previous years, and has announced two outstanding artists for 2020: Markus Acher and Micha Acher, known to many as founders and band members of The Notwist (photo © Patrick Morarescu).

In four different projects the two busy guys, who live in Munich, will present their multifaceted musical works during ELBJAZZ:

Anything can happen when The Notwist perform: indie rock, noise jazz, kraut, minimal music or electronic pop. Above it all floats the fragile singing of Markus Acher. The Notwist are intellectual, yet never complicated, they are catchy, but never winsome – and make great music for dancing. They are a fantastic band in which “technology never becomes a gimmick, but rather always serves to seduce” (Die ZEIT).

Spirit Fest comprises the English sound tinkerer Mat Fowler (Jam Money), Christoph “Cico” Beck (The Notwist) and Markus Acher (The Notwist), plus the Japanese avantgarde folk duo Tenniscoats. In 2020, the third album by this “international supergroup of dream pop” (taz) will be released.

The trio Acher Sommer Enders is composed of sousaphone (Micha Acher), percussion (Günther Baby Sommer) and saxophone (Johannes Enders). The unconventional musicians combine New Orleans sounds with free and modern jazz.

With Fehler Kuti, artist Julian Warner explores and experiments with the synthesizer repertoire of Markus and Micha Acher until the sounds buzz and the beats throb.

The reason given by the ELBJAZZ programme team for their choice of “Artists in Residence”: “Like no other artists, Markus and Micha Acher manage to create an innovative and successful interplay between various genres such as indie rock, electronica and jazz, in countless band projects and formations. With their stylistic openness and incessant activity, they bring different musical scenes together, not only in the studio, but also on stage. In particular with The Notwist, over the thirty years of their existence they have developed to become one of the most important German indie bands internationally, while also constantly reinventing themselves musically – reason enough to invite them to the festival as part of the “Artist in Residence” programme.”
