With his last album FOR YOU, the ECHO Jazz and Hamburger Jazz award-winner Wolfgang Schlüter fulfilled a dream. The planned debut of the project in the Elbphilharmonie as part of ELBJAZZ 2019 would have been a very special highlight of his musical career and of the festival itself. But on 12 November 2018, Schlüter (born 12 November 1933) unexpectedly passed away. To honour this exceptional musician, the concert will be performed in his spirit by fellow musicians.

JULIA HÜLSMANN IS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

ELBJAZZ is continuing its “Artist in Residence” programme. In 2019, it is Julia Hülsmann, who will be presenting her multifaceted artistic works on both days of the festival in three concerts and in various constellations (Julia Hülsmann Quintet plays The Beatles, Julia Hülsmann & Christopher Dell, Julia Hülsmann Octet). The native of Bonn is probably the key German female artist on the renowned ECM jazz label. The pianist is a professor at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin, claiming herself to be “no friend of unnecessary notes”. Whether as part of an octet, quintet or duo: Hülsmann is always inspiring with “lyrical improvisational music that goes beyond any showy display” (Die ZEIT).

Current programme:
Tower of Power, Michael Wollny Trio, Manu Katché, Julia Hülsmann – Artist in Residence, Benny Golson Quartet, Kamaal Williams, Joja Wendt, Jason Moran, Melanie De Biasio, Alfa Mist, FOR YOU – In Memory of Wolfgang Schlüter, ADHD, Kit Downes, Glass Museum, Marco Mezquida – Ravel’s dreams
