1 + 2 JUNE 2018

Hamburg, 17 April 2018 – ELBJAZZ presented this year’s timetable listing all the venues, programme items and times in a press conference. The festival is introducing this year an accompanying business platform called Business Mixer for artists and those involved in the music industry. The new format is targeted to interested parties from all submarkets wishing to collaborate in future more intensively with international companies and artists.

Comprising some 60 concerts, the musical line-up of this year’s ELBJAZZ takes place on a total of eight different stages. These are grouped around two centres – the HafenCity and the shipyards of Blohm+Voss: In the Elbphilharmonie (Grand Hall, Recital Hall), on the open air stage “HfMT Young Talents” on the square in front of the Elbphilharmonie, in St. Catherine’s Church, onboard the MS Stubnitz in the Baakenhafen as well as on three stages at Blohm+Voss (main open air stage, “Am Helgen” open air stage and the “NDR Info Radio Stage” in the ship building hall).

Alexander Schulz, ELBJAZZ Festival Director: “This year, too, the heart of ELBJAZZ will be virtually beating in two places – north and south of the Elbe! We are delighted that this year – in addition to the Grand Hall, where we will be presenting nine concerts – we can offer the Recital Hall as a second venue in the Elbphilharmonie. No reservation is required for attendance in the Recital Hall – though it will certainly be worth getting there early. In addition we would like to give our special thanks to Blohm+Voss, who have made it possible once again for the shipyard to become a vibrant festival venue for two days for music fans from all over Germany and beyond.”

Along with the publication of the programme, the supporting programme has now also been announced:

ELBJAZZ goes Virtual Reality: This year, for the first time, ELBJAZZ is presenting a virtual concert (photo) that takes the festival to the digital world. The 15-minute show will be opened by trumpeter Nils Wülker – or rather by his virtual image.

Eike Swoboda aka EIN ASTRONAUT is known for his live multimedia shows in which he is supported virtually by musicians from around the world. For ELBJAZZ he is reviving this concept and is inviting artists via YouTube to accompany his electronic pop beats.

For those mad about dance: On the Saturday of the festival (2 June) there is a big aftershow party that will take place at Blohm+Voss in the ship building hall following the last concert – manning the turntables is a whole team of Hamburg DJs. The international DJ collective home & abroad sessions will take over on the deck of the MS Stubnitz on both days of the festival (1 and 2 June), while on Friday evening (1 June) in Mojo’s it’s: The Soul of the Mojo Club.

An instrument workshop for children will be held in the Kaistudio of the Elbphilharmonie. For all adult jazz lovers, Nils Landgren, one of the most successful jazz musicians, is offering a trombone workshop there.

Furthermore, on Sunday (3 June) there will be a very special jazz worship service at St. Catherine’s with Pastor Frank Engelbrecht’s sermon inspired by Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream”.

The complete programme for ELBJAZZ 2018 is available now online, as is the ELBJAZZ App 2018 with all festival information and updates for iOS or Android.
