ELBJAZZ ANNOUNCES SHOW DAYS AND NINE NEW ACTS

Hamburg, 28 March 2018 – The music programme for ELBJAZZ 2018 is complete: More than 50 concerts on 1 and 2 June 2018 – plus three more, which can already be enjoyed on the evening beforehand, on 31 May, in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie – characterise the festival in 2018. The show days at which all of the artists will appear has now also been finalised – and can be found at www.elbjazz.de under “Programme".

With the newly confirmed acts completing the programme, ELBJAZZ presents a row of exciting artists who more than do justice to the reputation of ELBJAZZ as a “discoverer’s festival”:

Magnum Coltrane Price, who was born in Sweden in 1969 and grew up in Detroit, among other places, already got his first record contract at the age of 19. Known outside Scandinavia above all as the top-class bassist of the Nils Landgren Funk Unit, he is coming to ELBJAZZ with his own band, where he not only plays bass, but also sings.

Laura Perrudin (photo) loves playing with different music styles – from jazz to electronica, neo-soul and experimental folk. Along with her voice, the French artist relies on a very special instrument: an electronic chromatic harp. With it, she creates unique musical universes that recall Björk, Portishead or Flying Lotus, but which also contain traces of Debussy and Ravel.

“Junks not dead”: The seven characters from Botticelli Baby create hand-made swing music with a punk attitude. Absorbing many influences, they generate a melange of gypsy swing, the hot jazz of the early 1930s, the Balkan beat, the drama of the blues and the rowdiness of punk – far away from the mainstream, with an energy that has thrilled everyone to date.

Both here and internationally, the NDR Bigband is a magnet for top-class jazz musicians. Since 2002 the American Dan Gottshall has been lead-trumpeter there; previously he has been on tour with US stars such as Al Jarreau, Gary Thomas and Chaka Khan. At ELBJAZZ he will be performing his own music – accompanied by the guitarist Sandra Hempel and students from the big band of the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater” (HfMT).

Jazz numbers, classical music, folk songs and pop hits – the repertoire of Estonian Voices leaves nothing to be desired. With their debut album “Ole Hea (Be Good)” the A Capella ensemble won the prize for the best jazz album of 2015 in their home country of Estonia.

When you hear Volodja Brodsky playing on the clavinet and the Fender Rhodes piano, you might think that Herbie Hancock had resurrected his band Head Hunters. But Brodsky comes from Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and is a member of a band called Estrada Orchestra. And indeed he is not the only notable musician in this ensemble, which represents a dense, psychedelic funk sound that leaves lots of room for improvisation.

When the Norwegian trio Monkey Plot was formed in 2011, Christian Skar Winther concentrated above all on his acoustic guitars. Only with the third album did Winther plug in his electric model, thus radically changing the sound of Monkey Plot. However, it did not disrupt the intimacy of the primarily improvised music of this trio, which also includes Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard (bass) and Jan Martin Gismervik (percussion).

The HfMT Big Band awaits very special guests from a distant region in Asia with the Cadenza Collective. The formation is one of the most extraordinary bands in Nepal, combining jazz and Afro funk with Nepalese folk music.

The European Jazz Laboratory has already existed for seven years – having risen from a joint idea of ELBJAZZ and the HfMT. Each year, a new band is put together in this “experimental workshop”, comprising young European talents. This time the musicians come from Siena, Odense, Groningen, Birmingham and Hamburg. The works they develop during the project week will be presented on the HfMT Young Talents Stage.
