ELBJAZZ CONFIRMS 19 NEW ACTS

Hamburg, 8 March 2018 - They refuse to be pigeonholed and so provide for energetic fusions, creating a multi-faceted spectrum of jazz, blues, pop and hip-hop: 19 sterling new acts have supplemented the programme of ELBJAZZ 2018.

Jazz trumpeter Nils Wülker (photo) has put out his feelers towards hip-hop. With his exclusive urban sound concept, he and his band will make this year’s ELBJAZZ a cross-genre summit. Along for the ride are Hamburg hip-hop great and Beginner DJ Mad, songster Maxim and rapper Nico Suave.

Due to illness, Nighthawks with trumpeter Rainer Winterschladen and multi-instrumentalist Dal Martino had to cancel their appearance at last year’s ELBJAZZ. This year the sound artists are making good for their festival gig with their nu jazz compositions providing the perfect soundtrack for nighthawks.

Bass guitarist Kinga Głyk became famous for her fascinating version of “Tears in Heaven” that has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube. Since then the jazz world has been raving about the Polish bass player who is just 21. The musician is currently nominated for the ECHO Jazz.

Seven jazz veterans and virtuoso Afro-American musicians with tons of experience: The Cookers. Things get cooking once Billy Harper and Donald Harrison on sax, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpet, Danny Grissett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and Billy Hart on drums get going.

At last year’s Reeperbahn Festival 21-year-old Markus King of Greenville, South Carolina, was one of the big surprises. "Soul-influenced psychedelic rock" is what he calls his style, considered in the USA as the future of the blues.

The first time he heard "Mr. Tambourine Man", singer Charles Pasi was fascinated by the sound of the harmonica. Since then the French-Italian, born in 1984, has used the instrument in many of his songs, which cannot be categorised specifically. Last year Pasi’s album "Bricks" came out on the Blue Note label.

Doug Carn is among the veterans of the Hammond organ. He brought out his first album back in 1969. Later he worked with greats such as Nat Adderley, Earth, Wind & Fire, Shirley Horn and Stanley Turrentine.

It’s been forever since Heinz Sauer & Jasper van’t Hof first made music together as a duo. It’s about time then for another encounter between the tenor saxophonist and the pianist.

Hamburg’s pop course has produced a large number of musicians who have later gone on to launch great careers. That goes for JOCO sisters Josepha and Cosima Carl who have released two albums which have drawn a lot of attention with the pop duo’s vocals making a particular impression.
